Inhabitants of the Shell-Changing City
90cm x 74.5cm
Oil on canvas.
2023
The city, shedding its shell both socially and physically, is an infinite sea of concrete—devoid of entry or exit points. It is a labyrinth of crammed houses, lives stacked atop one another, and buildings spilling beyond the edges of the paper. From the nearest rooftops to the farthest reaches, every detail looms as if there’s no escape.

The city changes rapidly and violently, both demographically & physically, and leaves Alpsoy with much material to work with. The artist, who has been working with found objects for some time, establishes an organic relationship with the buildings through these objects, while at the same time establishing a connection with the past and present. In this installation, each discarded mailbox, now transformed as a faint echo of itself, imagines lives related to the city. Each box represents a household. With their accumulated bills, advertisements, and envelopes, they are positioned as a micro-scale archive of the lives of the inhabitants before the building’s demolition.
